About Helen Cowgill
Helen Cowgill is a highly specialised musculoskeletal Physiotherapist with over 10 years experience. Helen graduated from St George's Medical School with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy and has completed extensive post graduate training, particularly in the management of TMJ dysfunction.
Helen has vast experience in the treatment and management of musculoskeletal conditions and her past experience includes working within the NHS, Private sector, Premiership Football Club, Superleague Netball team, International Athletics and more recently being a member of the Physiotherapy team to the Olympic Equestrian Teams at the London Olympics.
Temporomandibular disorders are very common, however, TMJ and it's associated disorders at present are not taught in Physiotherapy undergraduate education and it is considered a specialism which very few Physiotherapists are qualified and capable of managing. Helen has vast experience in the treatment and management of Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders and is highly regarded both within the NHS and in Private Practices.
Helen currently works within the NHS at King's College Hospital Foundation Trust as a Clinical Lead Physiotherapist and was fundamental in setting up a pioneering TMJ Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Clinic 5 years ago. The data from this TMJ MDT clinic highlighted the importance of dedicated and specialist Physiotherapy management with Physiotherapy receiving the most referrals from clinic. The outcomes from this MDT clinic are considered to be significant and as such, Helen presented the data at the national Physiotherapy UK conference 2013.
Helen has also been published in the prestigious British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery regarding the perceived effectiveness of Physiotherapy in the management of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). Helen has published in the Private Physiotherapy Journal In Touch regarding the Physiotherapy in the Management of TMJ disorders.
Helen is passionate about TMJ treatment and education and is regularly invited to deliver post graduate lectures regarding TMD, in particular Physiotherapy input and management. Helen currently lectures on post graduate TMJ courses and has assisted in the creation of the first MDT TMJ Masters Module, which is due to run in the summer of this year.
Helen is a member of the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (MACP), Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI) and the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP).
Married with two young children, Helen lives in South East London and enjoys living an active life exploring the outdoors with her family.
